A pelvic ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to create pictures of organs and structures in your lower belly area, including the uterus, ovaries, bladder, and prostate. Your doctor might order this test to investigate pain, bleeding, infertility, or to check on a pregnancy, among other reasons. During the procedure, a technician will apply gel to your skin and move a small handheld device called a transducer across your lower abdomen to capture the images.
