Sepsis is a serious condition where the body has an overwhelming response to an infection that can affect multiple organ systems. A patient might need specialized treatment and monitoring in an intensive care unit if they develop sepsis, particularly if they require a mechanical ventilator (a breathing machine) for more than 96 hours to help their lungs function. During treatment, medical staff will work to control the infection with medications, support vital organ function, and gradually work toward helping the patient breathe on their own again.
